Making the magical from the mundane
Poetry can hold our secrets through its metaphors, and it can also bring magic to the mundane. I wrote this poem after dropping one of my sons off to school one day. Every single day when I picked him up, he would ask me what I had done. When I read this poem to myself now, it brings back those days of him holding my hand as we walked home from school, chatting about our day.
On this particular day I had done nothing much. I had taken the dog for a walk, saw a boy with his face painted like a tiger, seen some therapy clients, made dinner and caught up with a friend over coffee.
I have always loved fairy tales and the idea of heroic journeys, which was a source of guidance for this poem. Honestly, you should see my old labrador - he couldn’t be further from the idea of a wolf - and I’m not sure the woods at the back of my house count as ‘hinterlands’ but look what images can be conjured up when we release our imagination and have fun!
What is going on in your day that feels mundane, but with a bit of imagination could become magical?!
