Welcome to The Therapeutic Poet with Jacky Power
A place to give yourself permission to feel and access your inner wisdom.
Tricky, isn’t it, being yourself?
There’s the bits we like about ourselves, and then the bits we’d rather hide, not only from others, but from ourselves too. And there’s all the, you know, feelings.
I hope to encourage you to be exactly who you are.
Imagine welcoming your feelings, rather than pushing them down and carrying way too much heavy emotional baggage.
Imagine saying, 'What opportunity is here in this feeling?' rather than saying to yourself ‘this will pass’ and letting the rollercoaster of human emotion dictate your 'ride' through life.
Imagine getting curious about what you are feeling and learning how you can use your feelings to your best advantage.
I write here to really encourage you to be more you, to create a community where it’s not only ‘ok’ to feel, it’s welcomed because of the wisdom feelings can give us.
How about you give yourself permission to feel, rather than shrugging off your struggles with the shorthand of, ‘it’s bad for my mental health’?
What happens if we try to deny our feelings?
We end up ‘frozen and fine’.
You know, that pasted smile on your face while you go-go-go like a demon, creating a whirlwind of busy-ness so that you don’t feel the kaleidoscope of feelings underneath.
Or worse, we become medicated, isolated and dysregulated.
I speak from personal, as well as professional, experience.
Feelings are fantastic once we know how to recognise and acknowledge them.
I’m not saying that we should give ourselves permission to run around emoting all over everyone, but when we can process them and, most importantly, use them to navigate our life, it can be fantastic. Seriously, I really believe that emotions are macronutrients for the soul.
That’s why each week I focus on one feeling and write about its wisdom, using my poetry and my psychological insight. I’ll show you how we can not only acknowledge and identify our emotions and process them, but use them to alert us to the necessary changes we need to make, hopefully helping you to become not only emotionally literate, but emotionally agile.
So we can go from fine and frozen to feeling freedom.
You can have those alliterations for free!
I have also created a whole host of writing workshops all based around feelings which I run for individuals, groups and organisations. My favourite ones to run are on grief and joy, but I’ve a whole bunch of others. I’ll start sharing those on here soon I hope!
If you’d like to live a rich and juicy life by tuning in instead of tuning out, I’d love for you to join me!
